Well I bet my Title got a few of you thinking!
I popped out this afternoon with my OH, had a trip to Saltholme!
Pretty cold and not many birds about that I could photograph, we sighted some Black-tailed Godwits but only visible with bins.
I did however, capture this Male Wigeon in his full winter plumage.
I love these little ducks the colours are amazing.

Nature Is Amazing - Let Us Keep It That Way
Hi Buzzard
Incredibly beautiful photos, I love the last one where he is looking up. They are quite endearing aren't they.
Why is it the males of the duck species are the most colourful - is this a silly question?

Hi Buzzard,
What beautiful photos. The reflections in the water, and the movement of the water is so lovely, as are the ducks of course. Now, if you'd got your mate's £10k equipment, you might have got the godwits!
Cheers, Linda.

Lol Sparrow, I think I might have got your Redpoll and Siskin for that price!
I did try the settings that he explained to me and I think these photo's are better than my last Wigeon collection?
I will keep trying to get the sharpest shots, hopefully if the sun ever shines I will see another improvement!
Some real 'Stonkers' there Buzzard. They are great little ducks.
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

Presumably because drakes are love em & leave em types. The duck sits on the nest and needs to be dowdy or cryptically marked to avoid detection. With less of an imperative to be inconspicuous, the drakes can use colour as a weapon to impress the ladies & depress the competition!
Interesting that Simon King was talking about red necked phalaropes in his Shetland show yesterday. The poor dowtrodden male looks after the eggs in that case, so tis he who is less colourful.
Lovely photos Buzzard!

Hi fittmonk
Thanks for taking the time to reply, I'm sorry as it obviously was a silly question but it's something I always find quite intriguing when some female species of birds are just as colourful but the ducks I have ever seen it's the males that have all the glamour!
