Out head, St Andrews

Some images from 31/01/10, wonderful sunny day, very cold, I spent a couple of hours at the sea side. the seal was fine, just waiting for the tide.

I must admit at first it looked doomed!

This one was not so lucky! 'thats nature' sometimes.

If you really listen, you can hear the sea! Sanderling

Long-tailed Duck

Grey Plover, twice

Bar-tailed Godwit.

Time for me to go, maybe more later. Hope you enjoy.

John :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Hi John,  More great photos!  Love that eider, something I've yet to see.  Probably don't get them down south.

Re. Kingfishers - I saw two last weekend at Lymington Marshes on the south coast but other than that none since late last summer.

There is something new to learn everyday...

  • Lovely shots John and thank you without knowing it, you have answered two ids I wasnt sure about.  We had an airing over the weekend and visited one of our local hides.  There were lots and lots of Wigeon (1,000s) intermingled with Greylag geese, Shelduck plus some waders I wasn't sure about.  Is the Sanderling quite a small wader?  If so, then this is what I must have seen and the other which I wasn't sure about looked exactly like your Bar Tailed Godwit so thank you!

  • Another 2 superb pics John! Love the eider!! Such beautiful birds!

Not sure about the kingfishers. I do hope that they haven't suffered too much but I fear that there will be quite a few casualties this winter....

  • Thanks for kind words all, Kezmo the Sanderling is very small. It is nice to be of help, thank you.

The Kingfisher question will be on my mind until summer I fear. I sometimes feel the animal kingdom has more idea about predicting weather than we, clever, humans.

    John :-)

Kerry - 'We had an airing over the weekend'  lol  -   I love the Sanderlings. its great to watch  them run along the waters edge  only four or five steps at a time and stop and then continue along in this mode, really endearing wee characters

  • Hi Susan, Yeah your'e right they are really quite cute, so small compared to the other waders that I missed them completely at first.  It was my OH who said "what's that small one over there" that when I looked again through the bins I spotted them, all so busy dashing about completely oblivious to the larger waders.  I think one of them even walked through the legs of one wader without it even knowing!
