Set in the countryside near Witton Le Wear this is an oasis for wildlife. Lovely lakes, hides, forest walks and a river nearby. There is also a first floor observation tower which affords lovely views. A cafe, shop and toilets. We go quite often and have seen Wild Otters, Kingfishers, Heron, Teal, stoat, treecreeper, nuthatch, woodpecker and a huge variety of tits.Visited on Sunday, there was ice on the lake it was so cold and dull, but the take away coffees kept us going. Just a few shots
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain

Big thumbs up for Low Barnes.
I first visited back in February when my partners Dad took me up there. He lives local to the reserve (I live in Sunderland). I'd just gotten my first DSLR and he wanted me to see some bird life and get some snaps. I wasn't disappointed despite the freezing weather.
Great place with a good mix of species. I got my first Long Tailed Tit photos that day...albeit they were on the feeders.
I've been a couple of other times since too. Theres also a sister site 'Rainton Meadows' (Which I'm a lot nearer to) which is not as mature (fairly new) but still a decent look out and theres always Kestrels and Skylarks flitting around and sometimes Short Eared Owls (I've not seen those with mine own eyes, though)
I just started a Flickr feed recently (Although I've had an account since 2011) Please take a look and tell me what you think.
Thanks Willieo that's the very reason I stopped posting on this site, far too easy to steal photos
