Durham Wildlife Trust LOW BARNS Well worth a visit is you are in the North East

Set in the countryside near Witton Le Wear this is an oasis for wildlife. Lovely lakes, hides, forest walks and a river nearby. There is also a first floor observation tower which affords lovely views. A cafe, shop and toilets.  We go quite often and have seen Wild Otters, Kingfishers, Heron, Teal, stoat, treecreeper, nuthatch, woodpecker and a huge variety of tits.
Visited on Sunday, there was ice on the lake it was so cold and dull, but the take away coffees kept us going. Just a few shots

  • Welcome back Judi, Shorty was short-lived. LOL

That swan is so beautiful, a brilliant photo, and the heron is really detailed - brilliant. They are all great, as we have come to expect from you!

Low Barnes was on my list when we came up to Durham - but you took us somewhere else. Were you keeping it all to yourself? LOL.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • I would say its 150 to 200 yards to the first hide, The West Hide. All on flat paths and an incline to the hide. All these photos were taken from that hide Bob and to be honest we often never get any further LOL

Brilliant Judi, the whole place sounds excellent, but it looks as if the first hide would be good for dad. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Hi Bob, Just as a footnote you need to check this website, under latest news as the hide is occasionally closed to be used for educational purposes

It will give you any days when the hide is not available
