I feel like I have been living under a rock all these years.

I never knew there are some really lovely birds in the uk. I have only seen a small part of them.

All the lovely photos you all have. I have always liked birds, I would love to know more, I have the bug now, but no idea how to find out more. I have books.

when I moved here I was so shocked when I saw a Goldfinch I thought it got out of some one cage, thats how bad I was, ( not much better now, lol )

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

  • Hi Janet,

LOL about the escaped cage bird. I don't know why I am laughing because when I saw my first goldfinch on one of my feeders, less than a couple of months ago, I thought much the same!!!!   I remember that day so well as I had to fly upstairs to get my book to look it up to make sure what it was. I am still very proud of them in my garden. My little flock is about 6 normally, although I have had 12. When they are feeding I won't let anyone open the back door in case they are disturbed!!!

I am continually being astonished at our common birds now I look at them carefully and through binoculars, which I had never done before. Starlings have stunning plumage, even sparrows are beautifully marked, and jackdaws are so velvety, not to mention the male blackbirds and their yellow eyes. I can't believe I have spent the whole of my life surrounded by these birds and never loooked at them before.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Glad you are enjoying your discoveries, Janet.  I've always loved all wildlife, but working & raising a family of my own, never had the time to stop & look.  I only joined the RSPB this year, after going online last year & discovering the wonderful webcam in the summer of the Loch Garten Ospreys, nesting & producing their eggs and chicks, then watching them raise the young ones until they learned to fly. Amazingly, shortly after learning to fly, they set off for warmer climes in Africa, Portugal & other warm places until they themselves are ready to return to Scotland to breed.  If you want to see this for yourself, I recommend you watch the Loch Garten Webcam on this site, the birds start to nest & mate in March & April, then it is like a soap opera every day, to see the dramas.  I'm now gripped by seeing how many different breeds of garden bird I can attract to our garden at home, especially as since we had such bad colder weather, there are some of the more unusual ones coming to feed.   Enjoy your birds!

  • Thank you Lindybird, will have i look.
