I was doing my dishes at the kitchen window this morning when I noticed some movement in the big oak tree at the bottom of my garden.
On closer inspection I realised it was my greater spotted woodpecker, I think its the same one as it was a female I had last year.
She does look worse for wear but who can blame her given the weather. She's since been back to my bird cake feeder twice. Hopefully she'll recover some weight and condition in her feathers before too long.
Seeing her has made my day! Now, if only my long-tailed tits came back......
Make me a coffee and put me in front of the kitchen window!
Good for you Emma!! Hope both species stick around! I'd love to have either of those in my garden! (Actually I might but as I'm out more than in I don't see all that visits as such...)

thats great Emma, I have three GS woodpeckers who come to my garden, I love to watch them running up the tree tunk, she should pick up after a few good feeds.
I had a sick looking male black bird, looked like he had been in a few fights lost a few feathers very thin.
He was always the first to the food, I would put some food out just for him, he would see where I put it away from the others and he would eat it all on his own. I'm pleased to say his looking great now, holding his own in fights and he looks a picture of heath now. he still comes to see me every day, out of all the backbirds I knew which he was becuse he has a black beak one side it also a little misshapened.
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!
Hello, just read your posts and thought I'd update you. Unfortunately, I haven't seen Mrs GS woodpecker since saturday. I have been working though, so its possible she has been back.
On general terms, my whole garden seems very quiet. Lots of birds seem to have disappeared - only my Great tits seem to be around. I went from happy to sad :(
Hi Emma,
hopefully she's just coming when you're at work and you haven't seen her :o)
If its any consolation my garden has gone fairly quiet.
Just thought I'd update you all to see that not only have I seen Mrs GS Woodpecker but it appears there is also a Mr GS Woodpecker.
I haven't seen the female for a while, but the male has been there everyday this week. Unless I got my peckers crossed and mis-identified the male as a female lol!
On another update, a flock of siskins arrived today and have turned the garden upside down - hilarious to watch.
