MISTLE THRUSH, How safe is your vine?

When the first Mistle Thrush arrived in garden, it looked calm and happy. While the others squabbled over food with their own kind the Mistle Thrush sat and ate.

There was plenty of food for all but squabble they did.

I rewarded the Mistle Thrush with a treat!

Oops! now there is two of them, feathers everywhere.

Even when the obvious winner is left alone, no one is safe,

The anger is up and s/he is seeing red.

Meanwhile! someone fancies a shot at a grape.

Before you know it, the last one is gone!

If those Waxwings show up!!! This will be very costly. I had a great day at home, hope you enjoy my fruits :-)

If anyone is interested there are more photos on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/40261931@N06

I am also putting some of my other hobby, paintings, on a new web site  http://www.highlandmchale.tk

All comments welcome, please be gentle. :-)

  • What a wonderful series of shots John. It always amazes me that birds especially Blackbirds fight each other and let something else steal the food. I found the Thrushes to be much braver this year, must be something to do with the shortage of food and the weather

Had a look at your paintings John, they are excellent you could be an illustrator. I especially like the Barn Owl and The Puffins.

  • Hi John

What a superb set of photos. What I really like about them is that not only are they of such good quality but they tell a story.

I'm impressed that you've got your own vine. I think the mistle thrush was pretty pleased to.

I've had a quick look at your photos on Flickr. All I can say is do you run courses on photography?

    Best wishes Tony

  • Wow. What a series of photos. I am stunned, they are so beautiful, with a story as well. Incredible.

    Thank you for sharing these.

I also love your paintings, especially the Little Owl. You could easily be an illustrator.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Thanks for the very kind words, I've always painted but the photos are a new thing. I'm really a Bird watcher with a camera, point and shoot, still not sure of what I'm doing, faking it as I go. Thanks again.

    Hi John

What a superb set of photos. Good quality as usual and they do tell a story.

As we have spoken before briefly about the photography side of birding, your pictures are excellent and I can't believe you point and shoot, that is the level I'm at ( LOL ) if I can get my eyes to focus.  Skylarks and Pipits, I couldn't stop laughing at myself last night.

    Love the vine.

Been a Scotsman, no doubt are you making a wee dram!!!!

  • You are being very modest as usual, John. You are very talented. This series of photographs are truly superb and I have looked at them quite a few times. Your paintings must sell surely and I don't think the computer does them justice. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be the oil of the Tawny Owl. Fantastic bird and trees.

    Thanks Brenda H,

I have sold a dozen or so over the years, putting them in large multi artist displays, village halls and the likes. Once about ten years ago I had a solo event, sponsored by the northwest Arts council, never sold any, Oops! The Tawny Owl Oil is my fav too, but then it never sold either. The trees are from photos I took in Delamere Forrest, its a mix of several photos and a little imagination. The large Oils take 40 - 60 hours to paint in that style, that makes the price a problem, cant do it for nothing. The web idea is to see if I feel brave enough to put them out there again. You are right the photos of the photos are not doing them justice. when the weather picks up I will take the oils outside and get better photos.

    Thanks again.

Thanks Buzzard. Its no real vine, it is a creeper with a bunch of grapes hanging off it! Lol. It is true point and shoot, I'm prolific and patient but not qualified, to speak or instruct. Like I said before re (Larks etc) we all make mistakes and none of us know it all, you yesterday probably me tomorrow.

    Thanks maisie, kind words.

Two people said I could be an illustrator, cool where! Nice work, if I even knew where to begin looking for such work. stay at home painting Birds, wake up John you dreaming again!!!!
