Name our favourite Reserves, and why?

Hi there

I thought I would start a thread about favourite reserves that we visit on a daily basis.

Our one is Marston Vale (Marston Vale is where we heard our first Cetti's Warbler) at the moment not to forget our love of Grafham,  and Rutland too.

Any one else have a favourite hotspot, and why

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • My favourite reserve is Abberton Reservoir EWT. it is amazing how much wildlife they get. Peregrines, Smew, Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Barn Owl the list is endless.

in the summer the Barn Owls breed there and you also get the odd rarity like Spoonbill, Spotted Sandpiper and other waders

  • My favourite Reserve is Stodmarsh nature reserve in Canterbury, Kent. Have seen some amazing birds there and lots of other wildlife to even wild horses.  Its very cold in winter so wrap up warm you can walk lots of different walks all walk the whole circle which leads you to a pub which is nice !. It took us 2 hours to walk to the other side and then 2 hours back but this was with regular stops!

  • I remember being dragged around as a child by my dad when we were down visiting relatives. I think I'd appreciate it more now.  I don't remember seeing wild horses.  That sounds great.  The pub sounds like a nice break in proceedings.  I'd appreciate that bit a lot more now...

    Hi

I like a reserve I can visit all year round and see different birds as the seasons change. Holme NNR in North west Norfolk is almost ideal.

In winter there are snow buntings, long tailed duck, grebes, divers, and flocks of waders and geese.

In Spring migrants pass through, cuckoo, sedge reed and grasshopper warbler, ring ouzel, redstarts, terns, stints, barn owl.

In autumn  - crossbills, rare warblers, wood sandpipers, migrating raptors, pipits, hirundines, shrikes and chats.

  • When I was down in Kent last week I  visited Oare Marshes with my dad and we saw Avocets, Little Egret, Reed Buntings, Pintail and Snipe along with the 'normal' birds.  Dad was hoping to show me some bearded tits but they weren't cooperating.  It doesn't come up on the RSPB website though and I'm sure it is an RSPB reserve but maybe I got that wrong.  It's a small reserve but absolutely magnificent in it's own way..

  • I will go along with South Stack for the sheer spectacle, but I love Conwy! This was the first reserve I visited. As it was in summer I heard all the songsters in full voice from their reed bed homes. I even saw a water rail, a Little Egret and lots of other 'unknowns.'

I can't get there now as we have no transport, but I read their blog and latest sightings regularly. Thank you to the people who provide me with this opportunity.

  • We have booked a holiday cottage for a week in April on Anglesey, so I'm looking forward to my first visit to South Stack.

    Cheers, Linda.
