Hi there
I went for a short local walk around my local patch today - Bedford Town centre (without my camera)
It is amazing how many birds you can see on a walk for an hour and a half
First a Blackbird made an appearance, and a Robin sang in the Tree above. Some Sparrows moved from a hedge to the top of a mearby roof, and they joined the Starlings. The Starlings sat on the TV arials making their own little book of songs.
I make my way down George Street, and towards the embankment. Once at the embankment, lots of Geese and ducks moved about. I could see one of the Canadian Geese crippled with Angel wing (wonder if this was the same one I saw last year).
A Greylag, and a Pink Foot Goose stood along beside each other. Also some some Mallards. Black Headed Gulls, Mute Swans, and Local Pigeons sat in one patch close to the Geese
As I walk over one of the footbridges, a Cornorant flew along the River bank like he was on a mission. A Pied Wagtail chirped and flew over my head. A group of Finches moved about the nearby trees.
Once on the other side another Robin burst into song. A few tinklings from Goldfinches. Another walk towards St Mary's embankment (close to the college) and I could hear the sound of a group of Long Tail tits in the Trees above. I looked up and there was a flock of LTT's moving from Tree to Tree. A few Great Tits and Blue Tits smoved about with them. So there was a large flock of Tits moving about here there and everywhere.
I decided to head back along the path, and back to the embankment to George Street.
A Rook makes an appearance and decides to look into a crisp bag someone had dropped on the floor, and a Crow joined in. A Magpie appeared in front of me and flew off once more and disappeared into a nearby Tree.
Black Headed Gulls flew over my head, and a Common Gull joined in the group. I made my way across one of the few footbridges, I looked up in another tree to see more Long Tail Tits everywhere with other members of the Tit family. It was so busy with twitterings from Tits everywhere.
Two Mr Blackbirds remained on the wall close by, and a Female flies across to the other side of the roadway.
Just a quiet walk taking in all the sights and the sounds of the town.
Counted the list of bird, and there are just over 20 species in one walk {smile}
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Hi Kathy,
That's a super account of your walk and it's interesting to know how many birds you encountered on your way. Just goes to show that you can have just as good a birding session on your local patch as travelling to a reserve. We just need to open our eyes and ears to what's around us.
You have a lovely way of putting things and I just love "The Starlings sat on the TV arials making their own little book of songs" I picture them as carol singers, huddled together over a songsheet ;-)
There is something new to learn everyday...

Wow, what a journey, If I may...I saw this little flirt at work today.. :-)
Hi SB
Thank you for your kind reply about my walk.
Yes, it is amazing what you see in a short trip around your locla patch. I agree... about observation of birds, and wildlife around us is what we all need - to be at one with nature.
To me it is like floating on a cloud far away. wWhen you have time to be on your own and listen and observe all what is around you ... it is positive. Peace and harmony with nature is jsut the best thing to happen.
I thought that your wording 'carol singers' was apt for Starlings as they are great inventors of their songs. No song is ever the same any time. They just do their own thing.

Hi Juno
No worries.
I should change the name of this thread to 'Bird watching in your local Patch'
Love your Great Spotted Woodpecker playing hide and seek with you.
Lovely shot {smile}
