Wood Pigeons in my Garden

Hi there

I managed to get some pictures of one of our two Wood Pigeons this afternoon.

He looks a bit wet form the rain we had here so it has given him a bit of a Sid vicious punk hair do.

I had a chat to him also, so he was not scared off too easily and it worked.

I tried to get as close as possible to him and it worked to a point.

The last picture just tells it all as Woodies punk hairdo is showing well.  As for his beak he looks as if he has stuffed his mouth and cannot 'coo' anymore LOL

Regards

  • Thanks for the photo's Blackbird.

My Woodies are starting to make an appearance, now that the weather has changed again.

When I was out and about ringing last week, I witnessed huge flocks of upto 1500 Woodies. I haven't seen numbers like that in years.

They also seem to be appearing far more in urban areas! or this could be just were I live and travel?

  • Thanks for sharing the photos Blackbird. Lovely. His hair is a bit like mine first thing in the morning!

I have only seen one Wood Pigeon in my garden, and that was in August. He was alone and eating, but has never returned.

    Cheers, Linda.

Thank you for your replies and your information.

I managed to get another couple of pictures of the same Sid Vicious Wood Pigeon.  The light is really dull today so it adds a new dimension to the picture - the eyes glow ekkkk!

  • Hello Blackbird.

Those are great pictures of brilliant looking birds.  Woodpigeons are lovely to look at and can provide excellent entertainment.  I love watching them in my garden.  Here's one of my own.  I'm not sure if this is Haye - Valuev, or Ali - Frazier.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

    Hi Paul

Thank you for your kind reply

Your birds look very noble by the way they are sitting on the edge of the feeder.

I think my Mr Woodie here got very damp in all the rain we had today.

Did not help his looks at all LOL

Do you have names for yours?

    Regards

    Hi Buzzard

1,500 Woodies would be a delight anyday.

    You lucky thing to see that amount of birds at one time {smile}

    Regards

  • In this part of Shropshire, I regularly see flocks of several hundred flying over! Will try to get a photo some day!

Here's a photo I took in Mum's garden this summer of a pair sitting on her trellis. The one on the right (the female?) seemed to be taking food from the other, although in this shot his beak is closed. (Not a juvenile as they don't have the white neck 'ring' initially.

Here's a juvenile enjoying the sun back in September where I work

  • Good Morning, MarJus. Great photograph of two loving birds. I think we should have some attempts at captions of what we think they are saying to each other. Mine is, " Don't look now, but there is a woman trying to take a photograph of us! " ( Pathetic, I know. )

  • Hi all

love the photos - I do like watching woodpigeons, they are quite entertaining especially when I see them try to jump on one another to get the upper hand.

Paul - yours are doing what I call the "Mexican stand off" - both want to eat from the feeder but doesn't like the other being too close either - I see this all the time in the garden.  I have a hanging mesh feeder which the woodies seem to like.  I sit and watch them puff their chests out and try to look larger than they are and then both go into a comical half hearted pecking/bobbing mode to scare the other off!

MarJus - love your shots, especially the last one the juvie - adorable.
