Watching GoldFinch Flocks In The Garden

I had an hour to spare this afternoon so sat an watched the birds.

I tallied 28 species including some flocks of Goldfinch.

I personally think they're beautiful little birds, I could have watched them all day.

My Resident Sparrowhawk made an appearance and kill, opting for a Starling.

Also had another visitor trying his luck.

Most enjoyable with my coffee.

  • Great selection of wildlife there! I love goldies! That's a superb feeder you have there! Is that 20 'ports' that I can see? Can't see holes so is a nijer feeder with those tiny slots? My goldies completely ignored the nijer when I bought some, prefering the sunflower hearts, so that's what I've stuck with!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi MarJus,

Yes this particular feeder does have 20 ports. It's Called a Goldfinch Flocker!

I was using the xlarge nyjer feeders with the overspill trays attached, but the larger birds were using the trays and hogging the feeders!!!

  • Hi Buzzard - It looked as though you thoroughly enjoyed yourself as did the birds and the squirrel - our Goldfinches are flying around and spending most of the day in the alder tree at the bottom of the garden but are not coming back to the feeders yet - they are just so beautiful aren't they?

    Hi Lucybob

Same applies here Lucy.  I can hear their tinkling calls, but see no sigh of them at all.

Yes, they like to hide in trees at all - even the ones in the shopping centre close to where I stay.

Hopefully they will come back soon enough.

Yes, they are very beautiful birds.

    Regards

  • Great photos Buzzard - it's no wonder I have very few goldfinches, you've got them all ☺

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Buzzard

Lovely photos - you are lucky to get Goldfinches, I get them twice a year but they never stay, spring and autumn as they pass through.  I have food gallore to which they should love but no such luck.

  • A lovely way to while away an hour.  Lucky you.

My goldies have come back to the garden and yesterday I had five on the nijer feeder :-)

There is something new to learn everyday...

Thanks to you all for the comments.

I have the Goldies all year, at least four pairs during the earlier part of the year Feb - May, building up to ten pairs during the breeding season May-Aug. Then depending on how severe the winter months are the numbers vary.

They then bring the Juveniles 4-6, which looks as though they have had a good year this year as I have had at least 30 Juveniles with ten adults!

I'm also getting good numbers of Starling and House Sparrow.

Shhhhhhhh! keep your voice down lest the only two Goldfinches I have get wind of where their bretheren are - you have far too many already I think you should share!

Starlings I have loads of, oh boy do I, also house and tree sparrow (they love my cottoneaster).  I am though very successful with blue and coal tits, chaffinches, dunnocks and at least 2 robins - so all is not lost.

  • TWO robins?  Must be a large garden - our resident will not tolerate another anywhere near! (not too keen on dunnocks, either, but they just play hide and seek till he leaves!!!)

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
