At the week end I returned to the hide I spoke of in "bath time" thread. Arriving ten or twenty minutes late (after sun up) I missed by ten minutes I'm told the Kingfisher sitting in the sun on a post right in front of the hide again DOH!
Not to worry too much we all know, only to well, how this birding game goes. It was still a beautiful day and I saw some very nice birds and got one or two nice shots.
Goldeneye,
Mute Swan Came down just at the right angle for me.
Curlew, I had read it before but I still find it hard to see how this bird handles a Crab!
Golden Plover, I'm told, quite a long way off.
Little Grebe, Great fun
Redshank
Grey Heron
Goldeneye, with all these divers around, I still never managed to get one in the act. plenty of bums and splashes, timing issues I think :-)
Merganser
Great Black-backed Gull
If you are ever on the road to St Andrews stop, not one to miss!
John :-)
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Lovely photos! Might have to take a trip down there myself!
Millie & Fly the Border Collies
Excellent pics there John! Love the curlew with the crab!!
Will have to look it up next time I'm in Perthshire!

Brilliant photos John. What a shame you missed the kingfisher but there is always next time. And you were treated to a fantastic selection of waterbirds, to make up for it. Top class mute swan and grey heron pics, by the way.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Thanks for the kind words. I like the Swan Squirrel, I got lucky there! and I find the Curlew crab thing strange but cool, MarJus.
John, I have watched curlews, in amongst the waders, frequently, but I have yet to see them actually capture a crab. Super photo. Love the swan action photo and I never tire of seeing Golden Eye. Thanks
Hi John, Looks like a great place. Love the pics, especially the curlew and the swan. OH and I missed a kingfisher by ten minutes at the weekend too. Double doh!!
There is something new to learn everyday...
