Hi-
had my usual day out in Norfolk to start the year- did the route in reverse this year and scored 2 more spp than last year.
Started on the coast near Holme with barn owl, Slavonian Grebe , Grey partridge, Kittiwake, Snow Buntings, Long tailed Duck, then a Goosander (at Titchwell) along with the Coue's Redpoll, White fronted goose and usual waders. Moved inland for Common Buzzard and Woodland birds at Sculthorpe before moving cross country to Welney.
Didnt see a snipe all day . But plenty of Rooks!
Finished with 103 ( Tawny Owls calling after dark in garden)

WOW S.
That's a good start,
A great day's work !!!!
I thought you'd probably exceed 50 but 103 is quite an achievement for your first day. What an earth are you going to do for the other 365 days of this (leap) year.

I always aim for 100 on jan 1st and achieve it unless the weather is foul.
Now I'm off looking for stuff in other places. Tried some fields between the Ouse Washes RSPB and Eldernell washes this afternoon. Added 4 Short eared owls, 2 Peregrines, Bewicks swan, Red legged partridge, Tree Sparrow, Green woodpecker to bring the total to 109.
Plenty more birds to find in 2012 - I saw about 215 last year and I normally don't bird outside East Anglia except for trips abroad.
SOunds like a brill day S, pretty jelous :P
Did my own tour but got rained of so ended on an acceptable 84, and then today took that up to 114 :)

Good start to your year list Seymour, afraid bad health kept us in all day (nowt to do with alcohol last night) so window birding only.Only managed 174 last year due to a few limiting problems but enjoyed them all.Hoping to maybe get out in morning as wind direction looks good for a local raptor viewing area and little walking.
