Lapwings and Red Kites in Pembrokeshire

Hello,

Have noticed a great increase in Lapwing numbers in the St.Davids/ Fishguard area this year, for the last 3 or 4 years they have steadily been buiding up their numbers, would they be migrants ?? or are the colonies from Ramsey spreading east ?  either way it is lovely to see the fields covered in this way, a sight I havn't seen for over 30 years, when they used to be very common (I lived in Bedfordshire then) but then 'early cutting of sileage' decimated their numbers.  Hope this doesn't happen here. Although there are far more grazing fields in this area.   Also have noticed Red Kites around the Gwaun Valley, not many but enough to bring a thrill and distinctly different from the local crop of Buzzards.

  • Saw a red kite circling our farm fields in the centre of Pembs recently for the first time ever
Usually see 1 or 2 on my journey from Swansea to Camrose each week. Spotted 6 on one journey this year but had never seen one so far west before. Happy days!
