Just over a week ago I was innocently standing at Ulva Ferry, waiting for our white-tailed eagle trip to set out. On hearing the familiar, outraged shouts of a herring gull I turned around to see what it was shouting about - it turned out to be in pursuit of a young male hen harrier! The camera soon swung into action, though the light was terrible (sadly):
The last time I saw a male hen harrier was at least ten years ago so I was more than obliged to the gull for helpfully chasing it across my path!
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
