kingfishers-where to find them in aberdeenshire?

Hi All,

Does anyone happen to know where to see kingfishers in the aberdeenshire area?

I have heard that you can see them in the burn that flows through the grounds of haddo house, not sure if this is true or not-or if the birds are still there?

any tips much appreciated...

  • Hi Jennwren

Sorry not much help from me except to say that you may have noticed posts from a regular forum member called AL. He's from Aberdeen and I'm sure he will be able to help when he spots your enquiry. He knows loads about the wildlife around Aberdeen too if you want any more tips on where to find birds.

    Cheers

  • Hi JennWren

It is a fact that Kingfishers are rare in Scotland and a lot more abundant in England

I have to say I have not seen any kingfishers in Aberdeen (used to live there myself) at all or heard of any sightings

I have been lucky to see a glimpse of one in Edinburgh (where I come form) many years ago.

One of my friends was lucky to see one a couple of years ago close to where she stays at Gorgie Road end of Edinburgh - River of Leith

I am sure that someone will give you news of any sightings in Aberdeen area

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • thanks for the replys guys

my parents stay in fife (near dunfermline) and there is kingfishers in the burn  near their house. There is a sandy banking where you can see the current nest, and other holes drilled out.

I have been lucky enough to see them flying by, and catching a glimpse of the electic blue streak. one day as i crossed the burn i seen one sitting on a brach, but as i got my camera out he flew off. still it was a moment not to forget.

i'd love to see some up here though, so will ask al.

    thanks

  • Never saw any wee turquois flashes at Haddo myself but they might be there, there are some lovely pieces of water there for kingfishers, but it was a hard winter for them to survive.

Used to live 4miles away + we went there lots + lots, sorry to say we never saw any kingfishers. As I'msure you know there is some other fabulous wildlife there.

We did love to watch the osprey fishing over the Ythan down from Methlick on the back rd that takes you through Ythanbank, or at Forvie. Often thought / wondered about where they must be nesting perhaps not too far away!!

Would love to hear if you spot any as they would be fantastic to see on the next trip north!!

  • Hi Jenn

There are plenty of Kingfishers in and around the Northeast .. Around Aberdeen  you will find at least 3 pairs on the river Dee  if you go to Peter Culter and Head down to the river there  stop in the car park on Miltimber Brea and walk down river from the Bridge Looking across  below the Green shed on the other bank  you will see a pair there . further down just past the Island there is another pair there  Its about a mile down river.

You can also see one onr the River Don in Seaton park  at this time of year The male hangs about around the Island there  most of the winter.

Another place to see them but its kinda tricky to get to is  the Burn that runs through PeterCulter where RobRoy stands  Thats a great place also to see the Red Kites .

So aye there are more than a few Kingfishers up this way and they are an amasing  sight to see.

Hope thats a help to you!

It never fails to amaze me what there is on our doorstep ..... if only we would open our eyes and look!!!!!

Well done Al for spotting the local resident kingfisher so close to Aberdeen centre  - and for witnessing the dust up between the buzzard and the dippers - who won by the way?

Another amazing trip out for you this week!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Finally got to seaton park this afternoon. We walked up past the island i think your meaning-thre appears to be slalom poles there for canoeing. after that walked back down to where there is a grassy banking. didnt see any kingfisher (unfortunatly) but did see 2 dippers having a barney and chasing one another.

i hope i have the right area of seaton park..
