Minsmere Sunshine and the Usual Weather

Visited Minsmere for a couple of days last week, unfortunately arrived a lot later than planned on Tues but the sun was still shining, low and very bright. No point in walking around the reserve so headed out to Island Mere hide to see if any Marsh Harriers arriving for the roost.

Walking through the woodland the sun was sparkling on the reeds.

A record shot of MH sat on reedbed markers, very distant. saw about 6 HM in total

We watched the sunset.

Last ones in the hide so we closed all the windows, packed the camera away and the Barn Owl flew past, no pictures, so frustrating. Following morning set of after a coffee (double shot) sadly no sign of the American Green Winged Teal but found this Jay burying acorns.

On down to the beach, so many Cormorants flying past and a helpful guy with a scope showed us a very distant Red Throated Diver and a Grey Seal.

One of about 20 distant Pintail along with Wigeon, Teal, Gadwall, Shoveller and Black Tailed Godwits.

Suddenly a muted cry that beardies had appeared at the end of the hide in the reeds.

Being very acrobatic but always facing the wrong way, frustration

Carrying on around the reserve a Great BB Gull

And hundreds of Shoveller, ... well just shovelling

The following day on our way home we decided to skip Minsmere and discover North Warren to try and find some migrant geese...to follow.

  • The beardies are little beggars for having a single stalk between them and anyone with a camera, just enough to spoil the shot, but not enough to disguise their loveliness!! Looked a good couple of days, Tony
  • That teal's been a bit of a pain, ducking & diving the visitors. It invariably swims behind an island with the regular teal, then stays there when all its mates reappear. Drives you nuts! Looks like you had some sunshine at least :-)

  • Lovely set of photos Tony and nice to see the various species including the Beardies. Pity the GW Teal stayed in hiding but at least it's easy to spot with the vertical stripe - as long as there isn't 500+ teal at the same time like there was at Woolston Eyes one day !
