Confusion at Rye Meads

We went for a day spotting at Rye Meads searching for their elusive Bittern, but unfortunately we didn't catch a glimpse. What we did see was a Sandpiper on the fringes of the lake at the Tern hide. I managed to get a quick photo of it and identified it as a Green Sandpiper. When I consulted my Collins guide though, it says it is only a summer visitor but the RSPB website says it is a winter visitor. Can anyone clear up our confusion and confirm the sighting? Many thanks

    Hi Enki, yes you are quite right it is a Green Sandpiper. They are mostly seen on passage in autumn and spring. However, I consulted the newly published Britain's Birds which I thoroughly recommend and it says that small numbers (low 100's) do overwinter. 

    Good sighting and a very nice photograph.

    Thanks Teejay. It's nice know I'm not seeing things!
