Hello all, below is the link to my post on Leighton moss group.

John :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Hi John

Excellent photos!  I love the Egret and your snapshot of dawn - beautiful.

  • Oops! Can't reply in the other thread... access denied! Super photos and that B&B sounds fabulous! Will look it up and make a weekend of it sometime! Thanks for the excellent report and photos! Love them all but the bullfinch is stunning! The 'unrepeatables' when you saw the bittern made me laugh! I know the feeling! :-)

  • What beautiful photos and an excellent report.

There was a short article on my local radio this morning (Radio Lancashire) about the bittern. They only have one male bittern and apparently he was missing presumed dead as he didn't apear and no-one heard him. He normally is heard from about Valentine's Day onwards, but this year there was nothing. The wardens were all on very early morning patrol every day and as they heard nothing they thought he must have succumbed to the cold winter. Then on Easter weekend, he appeared, in full voice, and they are of course all delighted.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Thanks John. Excellent photographs. Your beautiful dawn photo, certainly gives a feel of the place. I did find the bittern and when I enlarged it, I thought I could see the head of a second one. Probably just the formation of the reeds.

  • Great photos and an interesting blog. I stayed at that Band B a couple of years ago - it was excellent.

  • Hi John

Great report along with great pictures.

You are so lucky to have seen a Bittern - lucky you and it is well worth the visit for that sighting alone.  The Egrets are lovely too though we never saw the  birds at all.  I know that you have to stop in a layby away from the Reserve to see the Egret colony.  The layby is full of other likeminded people with large scopes!  where did you see your Egret?

I noticed that you mentioned that you stayed in a B&B.   We stayed at the Stan and Laurel Hotel (I think that is the name).  Anyway the personal touch would suit us better we think.

Could you give a more details of your B & B as we are interested in going back to Leighton Moss in the future.  It would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

Thanks Judi! Shouldn't have seen that! Pointless really joining just to comment... Might join if I do go one day though! :-)
