Hi there
I thought I would open this thread about Sand Martins. Does anyone have them in their patch at all.
After Dave, and I had our walk about last weekend, it was great to see Sand Martins flying around Castle Sluice, Bedford. We have seen them every year for 3 years now (we have lived in Bedford since 2007) Lots of birds twittering in flight, and skimming the surface of the water for flies and bugs.
Great to see them around along with the yearly Swallows, Swifts and House Martins.
At Montrose Basin Reserve in Scotland, it was great to see Sand Martins nesting in holes in a man made bank. The man made bank had communial nest areas made of inserted pipes, and they where ideal for nesting birds. A nest hole for each bird.
Remember that only too well, and it was a success story.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Sounds a good spring in the Bedford area with sand martins, osprey, two barred crossbill etc :))

Hi Kathy, this may help you keep up to date with the ospreys at Rutland Water.
Thank you Brenda for the link
Will read up, and I have to say that it looks although the 'local' Ospreys are doing well at the moment.
Brilliant news! {big smile}

There are apparently Sand Martins moving back into a Sand Martin nesting bank created by my local council at my local water park, reserve type place.
I've yet to get over there for a look, but as my Binoculars are so rubbish I might struggle to look across the lake to see the bank made for them.
Hi Kathy,
had a walk around Saltholme today.
Good numbers of Sand Martins, flying about:-}

Good news Buzzard
They are just the most mesmerizing birds to watch.
It is although they are dancing above your head as you walk past their patch.
It is good to hear that they are around in other areas too {big smile}
