Ring Ouzels

Hi there

There was a very short clip about Ouzels on Countryfile tonight on the last 5 mins of the programme

Stanage Edge - Peak District

Stanage Edge is the most southerly breeding site for a rare bird called the Ring Ouzel. It spends winter abroad, but starts returning in a few weeks from now in spring. But during its foreign vacation, the Ring Ouzels’ habitat is far from deserted, because the craggy overhangs are popular with rock climbers.

Has anyone been lucky to see Ring Ouzels in this area.

Regards
Kathy and Dave

  • Never seen one, but liked the wardens ringtone!

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

    Hi Kathy, never seen one.

As most of my birding has been out and about rather than must go and see birding. There are a whole load of birds that I have never seen on UK shores.

I will have a check on were Ring Ouzels have been sighted with regards to were I live and if any are close enough then I may go and do my second twitch in forty years.

    Regards Buzzard

  • Hi Kathy,

We have been up to the Peak District many times but have never seen any Ring Ouzels while we have been up there although having said that we have driven past Stanage Edge but didn't think to look out for them as we didn't know we were within their range. We also have probably never been up there in the breeding season as we normally go up to the Peak District in the winter months and only occassionaly in the summer months as we like to avoid the hoards of day trippers.

We have only ever seen one and that was on the Pennines many years ago.Would love to see others though, and I too loved the Ringtone...

  • Stanage Edge is where OH born and bred area and we go to Peak District once a year on holiday and about 3 years ago when we were there we saw a  Ring Ouzel which was nesting in the area which was roped off to keep observers and climbers away, nice that the climbers agreed to keep away from that area.It is a really popular climbing place where many top climbers have learnt.

    Hi,

Ring Ouzels can be real B*gg**s to see :)   I have spent time in a breeding territory in Wales in several Springs and never seen them on site.  They are NOT like blackbirds , they hide on rocky slopes and sing out of sight.

On passage they dodge between gorse bushes , hide in dead ground, and 'go missing' for hours at a time.

They fly like fast  long winged fieldfares, NOT like flappy blackbirds :) Structurally they are totally different birds- when you see one have a good look, note the bill, primary projection and undertail.

They are a field craft challenge :)

    and............. they are coming........... :)
