Canaries?

Hi Everyone,

I'm considering taking Mr TF on a sort jaunt to the Canaries at the end of October.  I really have no clue about anything to do with that part of Spain, I don't even know which island to head for.

What I do know is that I would like to go to a quiet area, no kids clubs, water parks or such like, but with easy access to walking areas.  I also would like to know where to go to do some bird/nature watching, including dolphin watching trips if possible.  We could consider hiring a car once there.

I would be very grateful if anyone could share any experiences or recommendations.  Also of course, which birds I can expect to see.

Thanks

TF

  • That's quite a difficult question! We really liked La Palma, one of the quieter islands and very green. If you want a bit of peace I'd find a small villa or finca and definitely hire a car. Distances are short on all the islands and the car would really help getting to the start of walks, finding the good birding spots, etc.

Other possibilities are the north of Tenerife - away from the beaches and the same in Grand Canaria. There are different species to be found on each island and each has a different climate. (Note that the climate on each also varies from north to south and even east to west, plus of course with altitude).

The walking on La Palma was great and I believe the same can be said for the rest of the islands.

For an great quick overview on what special birds are on each island, try this link: http://www.fatbirder.com/links_geo/europe/spain_canary_islands.html

We used the Helm Field Guides, Birds of the Atlantic Islands, when we were there.

It's kind of pick an island you fancy the sound of and just go for it :-)

  • Oh, don't miss the trip reports at the bottom of the page for more detailed info :-)

  • I've not been to the Canaries myself but it so happens that a couple I know are going there in early November on a birding trip. I think they are going with Limosa but other comanies like Naturetrek also go there.

I'm not suggesting that you go with either of them as they are quite expensive and I expect you want to do your own thing. However, perusing their itineraries and trip reports may give you an idea of where to go and what wildlife to look out for. They mostly seem to concentrate on Tenerife, Fuertaventura and La Gomera.

North of Tenerife sounds like a definite possibility!
