This isn't the mystery, just a flock of Cormorants
More Cormorants
Lapwings aren't mysterious either
Or Redshank
Black Headed Gull coming into land
And another one
This I am not so sure about, I think it may be a Greenshank. Am I right?
What on Earth is this?

Great shots. You're right about the Greenshank, and the duck is a so-called 'manky Mallard' - one of the many domestic-bred variants of Mallards that find themselves out in the wild either through accident or design.

Thanks Akai, thought it might be a Mallard but wasn't sure. Really strange markings on that one. Nice to confirm the Greenshank too.
The Greenshank was a lucky shot. I saw a flash of white some distance away, sitting on the riverbank. Thought it was a Godwit in it's winter colours. As I started to photograph it, it took off and I kept the camera on it as it flew towards me. It was only when I got home and got it on the computer that I saw it was something else entirely.
Nice set of pics, is that the Crossness Nature reserve as I have never been there?

Not the Nature Reserve, these were taken by the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works Outfall on the river.
OK thanks very much, have you been to the nature reserve and if so is it worth a visit?
The Nature reserve is very new. To be honest, I am not sure where it is supposed to begin but I have had good reports of sightings in the pond by Norman Road
