Another finch at no. 41

I don't believe this, and maybe you won't because I didn't get a photo, but I had a bullfinch on my feeder this morning. I have never, ever, seen one, anywhere. I could tell she was a bullfinch by her size and shape, but the colouring was wrong. Having looked her up, she is a female. Sadly, I was speaking on the phone when she arrived, which is why there is no photo, although my daughter must have wondered why I was shouting OMG down the phone! There is definitely something in my garden attracting finches and deterring tits! She perched on the sunflower hearts for less than a minute and then was gone. Fingers crossed she returns.

Cheers, Linda.

  • Excellent Sparrow, your getting a right managerie there aren't you. you'll soon be getting flippant rather than somersaulting, all these new visitors you get everyday, how do you do it.

There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.

  • That's fantastic news Sparrow - you are more polite than me as I'd have put the phone down LOL

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Excellent!  Lucky you :-)

There is something new to learn everyday...

  • Now you're just showing off!!!

Well done you, It much be finch heaven in your garden.  I saw two long tailed tits in a tree when I was walking home for lunch and was busy talking to them telling them to follow me home when I caught sight of the expression on a passer by's face.   I had to clear the area before the men in white coats turned up :D

This was the first time I had ever noticed them near me so am hoping they may pay me a visit home or a hansel and gretel style trail of suet pellets may be called for.

    Well done again

    Sarah

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

  • There's no stopping you Sparrow. Great to see a bullfinch. They are such attractive birds but sadly they seem to be getting a lot scarcer. All you need now for a complete set is a hawfinch. For a small consideration and the appropriate application of Photoshop I'm sure something could be arranged (nudge).

I think you will have to change your avatar and user name to something like "Finch Friendly".

    Hi Sparrow

Well done to you seeing a Female Bullfinch in your garden.

Where there is a female there will be a male hiding somewhere LOL

Never had bullfinches in my garden yet.  Only ever seen them sitting on feeders in Reserves ie Leighton Moss.

Last time I noticed a Bullfinch on a feeder was at Leighton Moss last December. Funnily enough it was the Female Bullfinch who was happy to sit on the perch of the feeder.  The Male Bullfinch was a lot shyer and he took his seed at a wink of the eye, then disappeared into the nearest bush.

Sparrow: I would play it by ear, the bullfinch knows you have food so she is bound to come back again.

    Let us know Part 2.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Congratulations on your new visitor Sparrow!  Oh a Bullfinch, I'm jealous!

I've only ever seen one up here and that was on the walkway, just down from the house - oh how I hope he'd visit the garden!  They are just simply stunning birds and a shame they're so scarce.

I hope your female comes back and brings friends!
