Whisby nature park Lincoln

Whisby NP is located west of Lincoln and is a reserve of about 60 acres on an old industrial site. Basically it's a set of old lakes and pits with areas of scrub and meadow.

Winter birds include common diving duck, Goldeneye, ruddy duck, Great crested grebe, woodland species and gulls.  Ring necked duck has occurred.

Summer visitors include sedge and reed warblers, nightingale, chiffchaff etc. Little ringed plover breeds and in 2010 Black necked grebe bred for the first time.

The cafe and car park are good . Nice for a family walk around . :))

  • Hi Seymour, it certainly is handy hearing about any family friendly reserves what with having a 3yr old son in tow, my 8 yr old I don't worry about, but my 3yr old is mad on animals and birds he'll sit from beggining to end through all the nature shows, and when I'm out with him I sometimes end up with a dillema, do I point out any wildlife I've spotted and risk him getting rather animated and excited and frightening them away, to which he gets awfully upset, or do I say nothing then feel horrible that he has missed out. we've yet to go to our first reserve and it worries me that we'll upset some serious birders, I'd hate for someone to miss a sighting or a shot on film because my son gets so excited, I don't know if I'd dare take him in any hides yet if they are occupied.

    Hi,

if you're worried about frightening the birds I'd take him to a place with sealed glass fronted Hides- Welney springs to mind.

I expect other guys on here could suggest some more suitable sites :)

  • Hi B B B what a dilemna would hate a 3yr old to miss out,we have at Ringwood a one way glass hide which would be ideal but of course too far away but would bite the bullet and try a hide anyway and see what reaction you get.Essential 3yr old doesn't miss out anyway.Good luck.

Hi Sooty, that does sound ideal, that one would have to be marked up as one to visit while on our Hols, the New Forest is on our list of Holiday destinations.

Hi B B B didn't put details as thought too far away but it is Blashford lakes and is a fantastic place(free as well)although people usually leave a contribution for use of car park and toilets, several lakes and woodland walk with hides, not far away is RSPB Arne another really nice place, hope you enjoy your holiday.

  • Thanks ever so much Sooty, I'll make a note of those, it sounds lovely, I've heard of Blashford lakes, I've been trying for the life of me to remember where I've heard of them and why, but I can't, it was probably on this forum, my memory is not what it used to be.
