Does anyone know how to maintain habitat for field digger wasps in the garden? They are nesting under a lavender hedge in our garden, I saw them catch flies and carry them underground last July, but I have to replace the lavender this year. When would be best to do this without disturbing the wasps lifecycle too much?
There's no perfect time obviously, but I would probably aim for when they appear - if you dig now you'll be digging up pupae & they probably wouldn't survive the experience. If you dig when they're actively nesting, yes, you'll disturb some active nests, but they'll have time to relocate and dig new holes. Or do what I'd likely do, which is cut back the lavender and watch the wasps instead :-)

Thank you so much Whistling Joe. I’ll watch out for them. I think they like the shelter from that lavender hedge. They were amazing to watch last year. I hope they’ll stay.
