Hi out there,
I feed the birds all year with the correct feed for the time of year. As we have now just come into June I am now having to fill my 3 seed feeders 3 times a day, The feeders are 10" tall and I am using wild bird mix, As the feed is getting quite expensive this is costing me more and more? Is there an alternative that I can use or shall I just carry on as the birds seem to love this mix of seed. The adults are now feeding the young with this seed so this will add to amount.
Thank you for any future replies, Chris
Yes, it can get very expensive, you obviously have a lot of birds visiting. What species do you get?
I am afraid I don't really have an answer but I will mention a few alternatives. I am sure other members will add their own ideas.
You can supplement the seed with other types of food. I soak raisins overnight and the blackbirds and other birds enjoy them. I also put out dry porridge oats, I buy it cheap from the scoop shop and blackbirds, jackdaws, robins etc like it.
Fat balls are always popular, I can buy large ones from my local pet shop for 99pence each and make my own, but only in winter.
Buying seed in bulk also can work out cheaper. I have two large plastic containers with lids, so I have somewhere to safely store the seed.
I hope this has been of some help and apologies if you have already thought of these alternatives.
Kind regards Jane.
