We started another busy week off with the monthly Wetland Bird Survey at both Titchwell and Snettisham which involves counting the wetland birds on the site. This helps determine trends in the distribution and numbers of wetland birds across this site and nationally.

Another week is over and once again it has been very busy.

There a lot of visible changes which have been made on the reserve as the truxor has been on site cutting reed and clearing the ditches. The areas that have been cut are in front of the fen hide, the borrow pits along the west bank path and the reed bed poo plus a few other areas which aren't viewable from the paths…

Another week is over so that means another blog post.

This week has been busy completing the smaller jobs on the reserve. The reserve team have now managed to clear some of the reed on Patsys reed bed which allows there to be clearer views of the pool with the hope of making it easier to spot Common Snipe and Jack Snipe feeding on the edges.

The reserve is oozing with birds with 46 marsh harriers coming into roost, a couple of hen harriers and a rough legged buzzard over the saltmarsh. A selection of grebes and divers are on the sea, whilst freshmarsh has hundreds of wigeon, teal, golden plover and lapwing. A water pipit is showing incredibly well in front of Parrinder hide.

Another busy and productive week at Titchwell. The reserve team have managed to finish the cutting and raking of the reeds surrounding Freshmarsh. With the reed having been cut there is now an enhanced view over the marsh allowing the waders and wildfowl to be seen with greater ease from West Bank path. Fridays highlight was a Bewick's swan which brings the reserve year list up to 214. Other highlights include at least one ringtail hen harrier and a rough legged buzzard.

Belinda here, I am a new residential volunteer at Titchwell until Christmas and I have just completed my first two weeks at the reserve. I am currently on a placement year as part of my degree in environmental conservation at Bangor University and just returned from doing my second year of study in Norway. Highlights from the past couple of days including a good variety of birds on the sea including a late sandwich tern and a swallow in Titchwell village. 

Marsh harrier roosts are building up with 32 birds seen the other night along with a hen harrier. 

A steady weekend of birding at Titchwell with birds to be seen across the reserve. The little egrets are still on site roosting with 60+ counted on Sunday and marsh harrier numbers building. It is a good time of year to look for rough legged buzzards and there have been several along the norfolk coast in recent weeks. 

It has been a busy couple of weeks on the reserve. We have now finished cutting and burning the vegetation on the large island on the Freshmarsh ready for next years breeding season. Following this we have moved onto cutting the reed around the edge of the Freshmarsh to reduce reed encroachment and to enhance views for you our visitors. Amazing fews days on the reserve with 131 Pomarine skuas heading west all day Friday setting a new reserve record. A red flanked bluetail was seen briefly on the west bank path on monday and today there has been a firecrest along the meadow / fen trail area

Lots of action on the sea the past few days, but there was another big arrival of thrushes and finches passing through the reserve. Yellow browed warbler continues to be heard around the meadow trail and a waxwing flew through on Thursday. Marsh harrier roost is beginning to pick up with 22 coming into roost this week along with 76 little egrets.
