Weekly update from Residental Volunteer Belinda

Another busy and productive week at Titchwell. The reserve team have managed to finish the cutting and raking of the reeds surrounding Freshmarsh. With the reed having been cut there is now an enhanced view over the marsh allowing the waders and wildfowl to be seen with greater ease from West Bank path. A water pipit is also showing well on the cut reed. In addition the predator fence repairs on Freshmarsh has been completed. Once again this was a very muddy job…..

Now this is finished we have opened the sluice from the reedbed allowing the water level to rise which will cover the islands, providing an ideal habitat for the wintering wildfowl such as the wigeon and teal.

The smaller jobs that have been done this week include the removal of the old board walk stumps from the path leading to the beach preventing a potential trip hazard as well as hide cleaning and the removal of some signage.

We had reports from a visitor of what appears to be part of an old wooden boat on the beach. We have reported this to the local archaelogy department and await to find out any more information.

We have also had a visitor experience group meeting to discuss potential events we want to implement in the coming year. Please keep an eye out for these upcoming events on our website…

This weekend the Titchwell festive fun event occurred and was a great success. The raffle alone raised over £200 and the 1st prize was a guided walk with the reserve warden. Thank you to everyone who helped out and contributed donations.

Snettisham

Friday was a day of reserve and survey work at Snettisham. Whilst there we completed a pit count of all the birds on the four pits as well as doing some path and hide maintenance.

Snettisham is still a hive of activity for the pink footed geese so if you are interested in seeing them in their thousands, make sure you book onto one of the guided goose walks.

The remainder of this week looks to be busy again with the start of clearance on Patsys reed bed occurring. We will let you know next week how this is going.

That is all for now, thanks for reading.
