Records?

Just wondered, as a newbie to bird watching, if RSPB places like Saltholme keep any kind of official records of birds visiting the reserve?

  • Afternoon Pete,

We do indeed keep an eye on the species visiting the reserve and not just one but 4.

We record which species we get each year and that goes towards our reserve total. We also have two historical lists from before we opened. The first of the birds in the immediate Saltholme area and another in the wider area which includes areas we are hoping to manage in the future (Dorman's Pool and Cowpen Marsh for example).

Other records include bird log where daily sightings are recorded, the monthly WeBS counts and our brreding bird surveys so we can monitor the success of some of our key breeding species against any habitat management we've done.

    Hope that's of use

    Toby

  • And just in, one of our regulars has sent through a 'Cafe' list of all species seen from the cafe and balcony. It currently stands at a very healthy 144!
