Somebodies big lens would have helped so that I could have retreated instead of having to frame and take in the seconds it took for them to see me and depart.

Something to dream about seeing two kingfishers, I'd settle for one! - so difficult to take advantage of those moments, as you say they don't last long - well done for capturing them before they flitted!
I would love to say it was so that we would have a chance of repeating it. Called into RSPB Discovery Centre Thatcham on the way to London. Chased around all afternoon after female with only long distance shots possible then on way out saw her again flying up what looked to be a dead end stopped car and peered around tree to be met with the two. Like others it was a goal I set when I retired.
Great capture - have never seen two kingfishers - a rare treat.
