Numbering / naming of the lagoons?

When providing visit reports here and elsewhere, about sightings at Newport Wetlands, it would be useful to identify the lagoons, and maybe other specialist areas, in some way.

I have seen some people on the local GOS site refer to sightings at R1 to R6 but cannot source the reasoning behind this .

Is there any RSPB definitive ID system we could use for the reserve area or if none exists is it possible to instigate one ?

Best regards
Nigel

  • Very good point Nigel, it would be good if somone could clarify this.  Also, is there likely to be any progress on the promised hides?  I was informed that February was the latest these could be put in place.

  • Hi Dai,

The Hides question is also something I was wondering ;)

Obviously I realise that the Weather this last few months has not been ideal, but time is getting a little short now.

A hide or two would raise a good reserve to greatness ;o))

  • Have just noticed this posted on the GOS sightings Page

"Ther will be some disturbance this week as we carry out essential preparation work ahead of the breeding season. We will try to keep disturbance to a minimum"

    Ant,

Maybe the "Hides at Newport' Wetlands Jig"  may be the dance of the season Yet LOL

  • Hi Nigel,

We do have a map with the reedbed numbers on so please ask at reception next time you're down and we can print one off for you,

    Best wishes,

    Hana

  • They were resurfacing the paths whilst I was there last week.

Maybe going down later this week, Wednesday afternoon, possibly Thursday.

  • Hopefully will be down either Wednesday or Thursday myself - would like to be at a wetland on World Wetlands Day ;)

    EDIT

Looks like weather has suggested Thursday is best day for this weeks visit LOL - Light should be better too

Will also try to get the map digitized and uploaded to the web as PDF or similar to enable it to be shared with all that  want to use it.

On the upside I have managed to edit some more photos. Up to December now! More Newport Wetlands ones up on my flickr site!

  • Went down earlier - pretty quiet except for a SEO and a couple of Little egrets,

And glad to see you give health and safety priority - always good to be able to see where you're going :)

Have map with reedbed and field numbers on  - will digitize it and post up over next day or so - may have a go at doing an overlay for Google earth to put numbers on there

Will check out Flikr later - got to check my photos from today - not much but maybe one or two are OK ish :)

    Best regards
