Visited the lagoons and salt-marsh today at the top of the tide
lagoons still mostly frozen over but some duck on unfrozen areas, mostly mallard with odd tufted.
Salt-marsh / Estuary 100+ Curlew, 100+ Shelduck, Widgeon at eastern end, plus Dunlin and Redshank
Feeders had usual suspects and was visited by Great Spotted Woodpecker
Light was very low so image is not the best
To top off the day - whilst waiting for the Bus in the car park, (after I'd packed the camera ), five Waxwings landed on the trees between the two sections of the car park ;-)

Thanks for that report Nigel - wow what a day you had! Like the pic of the woody - and the waxwings - I have tried on four occasions to see them in Newport with much success - must try and get down there and see them if I can.

I think the place for waxwings at the moment is north Cardiff the Local reports talk of hundreds

The reports from Newport,, including mine, tend to be hit and run affairs
There was also a reported Hen Harrier at the wetlands this morning, before I got there.

My message of course should have read without much success...! I did hear they were in Cardiff but the
numbers mentioned on the link you sent are amazing - I'd like to clap eyes on just one!
Half my twitter friends have tweeted they have seen Waxwings in Cardiff this week!
I'm off to the in laws in Lincolnshire, where they have all flown from to escape the snow! Sigh! ;o)
