I've never seen the tide up so high as today. Right up to the seawall. The wind was helping it inshore as well.
On the birding front, very quiet. But did have a spectacular sighting of a kestrel, as it swooped below us, when we were looking down at the sea wall.
There are a few more Swans there now, one with a couple of signets in tow. Didn't go to the Western Lake (Powerstation end), the Eastern lagoon was quiet, it was too windy to see anything in the reeds.
I'm back down there on Sunday, weather permitting, hopefully, there will be more around.

It was pretty windy in Newport itself this afternoon. Seemed to be blowing from the west, so maybe not so good for blowing waxwings over from Bristol !

Nice Heron shot Cath!
Lovely shot .. of back down there for half one for a tweet up with other NewpWetlanders!
Hoping to watch the starlings a bit later.
Hi,
Had plans to join the Newport Wetlanders on Sunday afternoon but ended up going out for a walk with my dad and completely wore myself out. 10 miler around the Sirhowy Country Park. Took my bins but didn't see much.
Will pop down about 12:45 today during my lunchbreak, get my free cuppa and cake!

Sat at the picnic tables reading my book for half an hour during my lunchbreak, watched the Kestrel hunting from the wire about 10 yards away. Pretty sure I spotted a Sparrowhawk flying into the trees too.
Had my free coffee and lump of fudge cake in the cafe (thanks RSPB :-)). Cracking Great Spotted Woody pecking at the fat balls in the feeders outside the visitors centre.
Went down briefly on Sunday. Not much about, the usual swans, coots and moorhens. Some guy was saying a couple of goldcrests had been spotted - not seen them down there. Was surprised to see near the wooded area dragonflies still flying around.
Good sighting of the woodpecker H. I hear that a kingfisher has been seen near the visitor centre recently too - now that would be good to see

Ah ok, I have heard a Goldcrest-like high pitched call recently but it just didn't register in the brain. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for that.
Would be lovely to see a Kingfisher down there. I live in Risca just behind the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire Canal and we get quite a lot of Kingfishers along there, that little flash of blue is all I've managed to see though, would love to watch one fishing.
Will pop down today during my lunchbreak and have a look around then back to the cafe for a cuppa.
