Anything Interesting?

Quiet of here lately!

I haven't had chance because of work to get down the Wetlands for a while. Anyone else been down there and seen anything interesting?

  • It was beautiful yesterday here, we went for a quick walk after work and managed to get great views of a peregrine stooping through a large flock of dunlin four or five times with a spectacular sunset as the backdrop. There were a number of smallish groups of starlings (numbering from approx 50 - 500) whirling around the reedbeds, eventually settling on two of the pylons towards the power station end.

  • Weather permitting I will be there on Friday and Sunday this week!

  • I had a fantastic morning on 24th.  Went down for 8:30am, first in the car park.  It was an absolutely beautiful crisp morning, not a cloud in the sky.

Went straight down to the lighthouse, tide was in so, I turned left and sat on the bench waiting for the tide to go out.  Had a lovely feeling of contentment sitting there in warm clothes with a flask of coffee, a field guide and my bins watching the wildfowl bobbing about on the waterfront, counted 14 Wigeon and, as the tide started to roll out, so many Curlew flew in that it became impossible to count them!

I decided to wander down to the wood and out along to the seawall, walking back I heard the quiet single note call of a Bullfinch and managed to see her lurking in the tree, cracking Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard circling overhead calling and, this was the morning highlight, a superb Sparrowhawk flying overhead through the blue sky over to the power station.

There wasn't another soul down there and I didn't want to leave.  Missus did the usual "Where the HELL have you been!" as I got in, 5 hours later. :-)

  • Sounds like you had a great day down there H00z1sh.  Be interested in hearing your sightings PC. The earliest I can see me getting down there is the weekend after next.  Hope the Starling flocks build up by then.  I saw a huge flock down there a couple of years ago and it was an amazing sight.
