Went to several RSPB Reserves in North Norfolk last week ... guess what they all have in common, and the one thing Newport sadly lacks!

Hides!
Yup!
What perplexes me, they worry (and quite rightly) about vandalism, but Frieston Shore doesn't even have a visitor centre, but it still has one hide, that has been vandal free for years now!
Cley Marshes have several hides that again are not watched 24/7 .. I just don't get it. You have the perfect place for a hide at the far end of the lagoon by the small wooded area. With perfect viewing for woodland birds and the wildfowl.
It would make a brilliant reserve into one of the top ten reserves quite easily! Frampton Shore are quite jealous of Newport as it is so much more established than themselves, there are at least two hides there, one of them a brilliant 360degree one!
Couldn't agree more mate, I've been on at on at them about hides but it just falls on deaf ears.
They have cleared a large space near the central screen near the lighthouse for something though, dunno if it's just reed clearance but there's a sign up saying "keep out, construction"

Went down there tonite and see the large area you mentioned - doesn't look like reed clearance - and yes it does have a sign saying 'Construction' - so let's keep our fingers crossed. It would ideal if a hide was built there!

You never know ... someone somewhere may have been reading this thread ....
The other good place for a hide would be in that bit at the end (or start) of the wooded area, where you walk up to the viewing area.
Had it confirmed today that the cleared area is definitely not for a hide.
However...
There are plans to have several hides on the whole of the reserve with the possibility of one being in place at Uskmouth by February
That's fantastic news mate!
It's about bloody time to be honest, it will make the reserve so much better, especially during the winter months.

And there was much rejoicing from this bit of Glamorgan!!!
