Five Little Owl.
Count 'em...FIVE!
Seemed like two broods.
H.
I have only seen them from afar! Where do they "hang out" these days?
"IT IS SAID THAT LIFE FLASHES BEFORE YOUR EYES BEFORE YOU DIE. THAT IS TRUE, IT'S CALLED LIVING."Death - Terry Pratchett (The Last Continent).
Up into the ridge and left towards the wooded end, go to the last pylon and look out over the fields. A few dead horizontal trees, they're usually around that area.
A couple from the midlands were there watching with me, nice couple, had just come back from Suffolk and we got chatting about the Bitterns at Lakenheath Fen and the Hobby down at The Wetlands. They'd watched it for 25 minutes just sat on the pylon!
Left .. thats towards the powerstation?
I'm moving house this week, so going to be stuffed in any chance of getting down there! Mores the pity!
Ant
Guess where I'm going Friday then?! ;-)
Grr! Tell you what, you come here and move boxes ... I will make sure the Little Owls are okay! ;o)
No, opposite end, straight past the visitor centre, up onto the ridge, left and keep going until you get to the bend at the end near the pylons and the little wood.
Saw two on Monday then I took a mate from work down there on the Tuesday and we got three. He was thrilled to bits.
Haven't seen any since Wednesday though.
Hoping to have a wander down there Sunday! Nearly all moved into the new house now. The previous owners were wildlife nuts. I refilled all their bird feeders on the day I got the keys (after giving them a good soak in diluted dettol and copious washing with hot water), thinking it would take a week or so to get the birds back into the garden. I went up there the next day to find over 50 birds in the garden!!!
I think I had most of the finches and tits covered, but the star attraction for me were the two Nuthatches on the peanut feeder! I suspect my bird food costs are going to rise over this autumn/ winter! ;o)
i haven't put my feeding station up yet!
I am hoping the little owls will be there somewhere! ;o)
Now THAT is the kind of garden I want. Sounds like you could spend days just sat watching the feeders. Nuthatch is a lovely bird too, wonderful to have 50 species visiting.
About 6 years ago my car was broken into when we were living in a rented house so, I decided it was time to buy our own house and I was so annoyed that my car was broken into that I was determined to get a garage. The house we went for had a garage out the back but no garden. Next house, HUGE garden is priority number one!
Did you manage to see the Owls on Sunday? They only tend to appear when the sun is out and it wasn't to bad on Sunday.
Wish I'd gone to Birdfair. :-(
I am hoping to go to Newport this Sunday, hopefully with my brother in tow so I can show him how to get there!
I have blipfoto'd a picture of my garden up, have a look, I am pontycyclops on there too. Google it, and search for me!
I wish it was 50 species, it was about 50 birds, but there were blue tits, coal tits, black caps, chaffinches, wrens and possibly tree creepers, as well as the nutchatches! I realised I have a shed/greenhouse thing in the top corner. If I put a bit of green cloth over the door I have a natural hide to set my camera up in! When I am settled, and back from my hols in norfolk I am going to be out there with the camera!!!!!! Watch this space!
