Steve, I noticed this and have been trying to identify it but cannot find in the RSPB Pocket Book of Wild Flowers. The closest I could come was a picture of Greater Knapweed but that is a tall plant. I hope someone on here can clarify.
Steve, it's a Robin's Pincushion!

A good amount of detail may be seen here,
Cynipid Gall Wasp
amazing how even the smallest part of nature can be so interesting
HI Steve, welcome to the forum! This is a really interesting thread, I've not seen these burrs yet having been in London over the last couple of weekends so I'm a bit behind on what's happening in the Wetlands. Just for your information to load the whole image you need to click on the green icon in the menu bar and navigate to the file on your computer, unfortunately the quality can't be very hi-res as it creates problems, so you may have to reduce the file size in your image editing program
.
Thanks for posting that link B58, very interesting & informative! I do enjoy furthering my education, new learning every day on this CF!
Excellent info Nigel - quite incredible - i'd seen the round brown wasp galls on trees but these mossy ones are new to me.
