This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
Thanks Lindy :-)
Here is the capture of Alba's route I just took on GE.
If nothing goes right, go left! :-)
Extending Alba and Caledonia's respective track bearings, take both to landfalls on the north coast of Spain!

Good morning all and thanks for the input. Caledonia is certainly getting a move on. Alba taking her time but still moving on. Hope by the time the next update is available they will be well into their journeys.

JSB : Using your extended track for Alba , it is quite near a sighting in Cornwall today at College reservoir. However this is a little too far west for my liking.
OH Alan , hope she does not do an Deshar and flys across the Atlantic. instead of the shortest way to Africa.
hi alan and fish, that is my worry a little is that she is a bit too far west. fingers, legs and arms crossed that she will drift a bit more east :(
I shall be go glad to get an update on the girls tomorrow. I need to KNOW that Cally landed in France and as for Alba. I note than an Osprey was seen at Sennen Cove Cornwall today. I really hope that it wasn't Alba. You can't get much further west than that, and if this bird flies due south, it will miss France altogether :o( I hope that it doesn't fly south west. Sorry, I am in mother hen mode.

Well, let's hope the same gene pool characteristics, that helped with the navigation of these waters for Tore (Orange) and Rothes (Green) has been copied to both, Alba and Caledonia. Also as some will recall Deshar had a detour in the North Sea, at the start of his migration, which cannot have helped him.

Me too! ALAN has been reporting an osprey at Drift Reservoir near Penzance since at least 12 Aug - I was going to say "hope the Sennen Cove bird is that one", but I don't want any osprey to go astray. Not so hazardous if they're not a first-timer though?

Take courage !! Tore back tracked along the Cornish coast before she flew the Channel.
