MANTON BAY - June 2024 to end of season

Continued from Manton Bay – April 2024.

The history of the Manton Bay nest and stats can be found here .

2024 Season Summary:  Maya, equalling her own record, was the first osprey to return back arriving on 12 March @ 15:58 and her partner, Blue 33(11) joined her on the 13 March @ 15:25.  The pair quickly re-established their bond and Maya laid three eggs, the first on 30 March @ 13:58, the second on 02 April @ 13:15 and a third on 05 April @ 11:06.  At 10:50 on 5 May Maya remove one egg from the nest and the pair continued to incubate the two eggs of which only one was viable (most likely the third egg) and hatched at 23:23 on 10 May.  On 15 May at 14:21 a live fish was delivered to the nest displacing the chick into the sticks at the side of the nest. Unable to get free, Rutland Officials organised a rescue operation. They accessed the nest and placed the chick back in the middle of the nest and thankfully none the worse for its ordeal.

A few weeks later the unviable egg eventually broke and was removed by Maya. The chick thrived under the care and protection of its parents and on 19 June 2024 was ringed with the Blue Darvic IR0.  The ringing was recorded and can be seen here and his vitals were noted as follows:

Blue IR0(24) spent the next couple of weeks strengthening his wings and on 3 July 2024 at 08:07, IRO fledged

Blue 33(11) will continue to provide for his family and IRO will explore his surroundings, building his strength and confidence for the long journey ahead when he will take off on his first migration.

  • So nice to have you back Karen

  • Thank you Cirrus.  Good to be looking in on the nest again.

Checking back and not a lot of activity today.  IRO has arrived a few minutes ago and shouting for his dinner lol

  • 18:30   IR0 in front of the cam and still yelling for fish

Often wonder when they look down like this if they are looking for or watching fish swimming around

  • 20:05  IR0 has been on and off the nest constantly fish calling - still waiting on his fish supper

  • 20:56  IR0 who had left returns, yelling and into receiving position as 33 approaches

IR0 snatches the fish  - Still living and flaps around when 33 lets but IR0 soon gets hold of it

    33 leaves IR0 tucking in

21:10  IR0 turns around facing us with his fish

and then flies off with it

21:11  Maya arrives and cleans up

  • Morning ALL

05:16  Maya arrives closely followed by IR0

05:19  Maya flies off leaving IR0 fish calling as the sun rises (officially 05:20)

    05:19  IRO flies off

Much better view of the sunrise on widecam - thanks SunnyKate :-)

  • Looking back on today:

08:10  IR0 appears - still waiting on breakfish

    08:55  Unseen intruder, 33 defending

    09:59  Intruder still around - 33 agitated

    10:19  Maya tidying up

10:51  Fish calling, she too is waiting on breakfish

11:15  33 arrives with a large headless fish

Maya grabs hold and takes off with it

    14:21  33 returns, agitated

15:07  Brief visit from IR0- fish calling

    15:10  33 approaches

and lands with a small fish for him

15:15  After eating some, IR0 flies off with the fish

    18:01  IR0 fish calling

Presently 18:22  IRO has taken off - ENS

  • 19:20  IR0 comes down from the campost and into receiving position!

seconds later, 33 arrives with supper

IR0 stands on it, flattening the fish as its still living

then IR0 takes off with the fish - hovers then back down, and same again - helicoptering!!

Perhaps the wriggling fish is stopping IRO from flying off with it??

19:26  IRO stands with his fish for a few minutes

19:29  And eventually he takes off with it
