Asha & Brodie

The partnership has matured this season, with Asha continuing her good female role (and she loves nest-building) and Brodie being more reliable, both fishing and incubating.

The pair have fought their way thru all kinds of nasty weather - snow, wind and rain - and intruders, including the dreaded KL5 Klive, have been a nuisance but not dangerous...

so far.

EDIT

********

Sadly, the month of May heralded irresistible aggression from BlueKL5 "Klive", who had ruined the end of last season for the 2 juvies.

Within the first 2 days Klive had driven Brodie from the area (tho Brodie did return a couple of times to dive-bomb Klive, to no effect) and destroyed the eggs.  He commenced to woo Asha clumsily, selfishly and inappropriately, as can be seen from the following pages.

IMAGICAT

  • Thursday 1 August - where is the year going...

PTZ stays in the same place with the view overlooking the nest, until

11.23     Klive arrives, nibbles a twig or two, shakes his feathers, and

11.29     Klive leaves.  Cam scans the area and returns to the nest 11.31.

    12.27     still very quiet.

  • 13.07     Osprey appeared from behind the trees beyond the old nest and PTZ and landed on the dead tree to the very left of the screen.s. It appeared to be  eating or cleaning its legs after a meal.

13.13     It flew to the nest, and it's Klive.  He potters in his usual way, pecking sticks and nibbling bits and pieces.

13.25     He was on lookout over the back of the nest (from nest cam) .  Doing a spot of preening in between.

13.37     A break in the clouds lets the sun thru, and Klive continues with his preening.

13.53     He stops for a scrutiny of the land around, and turns around, stepping towards us for a different view.

    14.00     He flies sedately off.

14.14     Klive returns with a long thin bow-like stick, tries to put it into place of the rim, scratches his head and looks toward 'us'.

14.17     Attention briefly returns to bit and pieces in the cup.

14.19     Checks his breast feathers and other feathers, before going to the back of the nest to rearrange other sticks he wasn't happy with.

14.40     After a period of stickifying, preening, and looking, he flew off..   The wind is getting up again.

14.52     An unringed osprey, possibly a female lands.  It's not Asha.  It has no  spotty petticoat, and the head and facial markings aren't the same.  It also looks strained, and not at home.

It looked carefully around it, checking for other osprey.

14.53     PTZ zooms in.  It has its back towards the PTZ.

15.03     She flies up to the cam perch

15.04     and is away.  Cam searches, but doesn't see her again.

17.05     Unringed female landed. It looks like the earlier one, but I am open to other suggestions!  Definitely not Asha.

    17.07.56      It flew away.

I'm saving Klive till the end of the day, so he's all in one vid.

I thought this was the pale peaceful male we've seen a few times... but realise s/he's quite big for a male.
