It was a very welcomed surprise to see NC0 arrive back from her wintering grounds on the 8th March, her earliest return to date! NC0 kept herself occupied while alone - catching some impressive-sized fish to eat as well as preparing the nest in readiness for future eggs. To note, her severely split blue darvic ring (as seen last season) is missing and she now only wears a BTO ring on her right leg.
It was a nail-biting time for us waiting to see if dear Laddie would make an appearance too and, little did we know, that it would be a further 19 days before he made his ‘grand entrance’ on the 27th, being ‘escorted’ to the nest by a flock of very vocal gulls!
Having settled into their usual routines on the nest and around the reserve, we now look forward to watching this season’s events unfold.

Sandra said:9:54 An unringed intruder, with similar head/eye band markings to NC0, landed on the nest. Cam zoomed in as it lay down in the centre. At 10:01, it flew off when NC0 came to defend the nest
I was going to up the sound for the chips, but it turned out that the volume was overspilling, no room for manoeuvre :(((
IMAGICAT
Wow, Scylla, thank you so much for your fab vid of the intruder! I completely missed the speedy flight over NC0 at 3min 24sec (vid time) and didn't realise, until slowing it down to 0.25, that there were actually TWO flying above the nest - Laddie was giving chase!

12th April
Morning All
5:08 Laddie arrived at the nest
It was a little bit breezy, both faced into the wind
5:25 Mating
Another at 5:54
7:16 A small fish delivery (I couldn't tell if it was headless or not). NC0 jumped down from the cam post to collect it
7:36 A beautiful scene
7:54 Mating
Both have been on and off the nest, singularly, since then.
9:31 ENS at present and has been since 8:37
Edit: Laddie landed at 9:33
9:36 Mating
11:11 An attempt at mating - it was too windy for Laddie to stay on NC0
Mating at 11:43
A fish delivery at 12:02
12:16 NC0 returned, with the fish in her right talons, for a short two minute stay. She made a few contact calls on landing
She moved to the back, right edge of the nest
After looking around, she took off with her meal
14:40 Mating
14:51 A mating attempt. NC0 did not raise her tail and she pecked Laddie off
Fish delivery at 15:19
It took NC0 a couple of attempts to pick up the fish
Off she went
Laddie did well to catch that in such blustery conditions!
