It was a very welcomed surprise to see NC0 arrive back from her wintering grounds on the 8th March, her earliest return to date! NC0 kept herself occupied while alone - catching some impressive-sized fish to eat as well as preparing the nest in readiness for future eggs. To note, her severely split blue darvic ring (as seen last season) is missing and she now only wears a BTO ring on her right leg.
It was a nail-biting time for us waiting to see if dear Laddie would make an appearance too and, little did we know, that it would be a further 19 days before he made his ‘grand entrance’ on the 27th, being ‘escorted’ to the nest by a flock of very vocal gulls!
Having settled into their usual routines on the nest and around the reserve, we now look forward to watching this season’s events unfold.

Laddie stick surfing, 11:21
Blue ringed (left leg) intruder at 11:30, touched down on the nest briefly
NC0 silently flapped her wings, initially
Laddie returned to the nest. Both on high alert
They both flew off
Intruder
Pic cropped, unable to make out its ring ID
A brief touchdown
And away
Laddie gave chase (his talons, top middle)
A single chip could be heard when they were just out of cam view

11:50 Laddie down from the cam post. NC0, I assume, on the birch
Nestcupping
12:28 Currently, NC0 on the nest
13:00 An unsuccessful mating attempt
Two successful ones on the nest perch
13:57 First
14:15 Second. NC0 initially pecked at him...
But she was willing to accept his advances once he had settled on her
A small, headless fish from Laddie, 16:41. NC0 didn't make a sound on his approach or after landing - very unusual for her!
She flew into this area of the birch to eat, not for the first time
Laddie has remained on the nest since the delivery
16:59 At present
NC0 was vocalising (short, soft calls) on the cam post just after 18:00
She flapped down to the nest at 18:18.
She sat on the perch for a little while
NC0 to the nest with a thin stick/twig at 18:27 - she had collected it from beyond the birch corner
19:24 NC0 has been standing in this spot/position for the almost an hour
After popping off the nest for a couple of minutes, NC0 returned with a curved stick at 19:46. She made a series of short calls on landing. I wonder if that is Laddie on the birch, he's sat in that spot before
20:00 Will she roost on the perch tonight?
Pre-night cam, 20:27
20:39 A glance to the right..
Then she flew off
Sandra said:Then she flew off
Then she flew back, but not until a time I guestimated and which you'll firm up, SANDRA! I couldn't hear anyone besides a bit of geese:
I've done this until I have to switch over to Clywedog:
