Brief history of Manton Bay:
The nest was first occupied by White 08(97) and Green 5N(04) in 2007 who raised 2 chicks. In 2008 they paired again but the nest failed and in 2009 it was unused. In 2010 a new pair, Green 5R(04) and an unringed female nicknamed Mrs 5R, took up residence and over the next four years raised 11 chicks. Green 5R(04) failed to return in 2014 and Mrs 5R paired with a new mate, Blue 28(10) and laid 3 eggs. Blue 33(11) arrived determined to claim this nest and evicted Blue 28(10). Blue 33(11) kicked out the eggs and spent the remainder of the season bonding with Mrs 5R who was then officially named “Maya”. Since 2015, Maya and Blue 33(11) have returned reuniting their partnership and to date have successfully raised 23 chicks.

Here’s wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season.
Thanks Glider - lots going on!!
Meanwhile I have been looking back about the naming of Maya.
Unfortunately we no longer have access to previous Rutland Blogs however thanks to everyone on this forum we do hold information and it was all recorded on the Rutland Osprey Project Thread 2014.
Rutland released a blog "Whats in a name" looking for a new name 7 April 2014 - (link to my post in the ROP 2014 thread).
Naming choices were - Hera, Maya or Haii and open to votes.
And we all know, Maya was the public choice.

Unknown said:As far as I know, the name Maya was not given to the MB female until the season of 2014, after male 5R did not return. Prior to that, when she was breeding with 5R, folks on this forum and possibly the Rutland folk themselves, called her Mrs 5R. Well, she could not really be called that after 5R did not return
Hiya, GB, it's MsDeeplyAngryAboutEverythingToday here
She was and should have remained Mrs5R, the name was welded to her during the season that 5R didn't return and she was so determined and brave. She certainly shouldn't have been given an exotic-sounding name - if it had to be changed it should have been English, like Aelfthryth
Isn't it great to see this nest (and LotL) going so well while we wait anxiously for other returners?

Thanks ,Karen, Cirrus, everyone, for filling out the story of Maya being named Maya. I thought I might have remembered a vote of some sort but had no idea who might have been allowed to vote. Scylla, sorry to hear you are having an angry day! (But you do make me laugh! And is that name you suggest Anglo-Saxon?!) As for the name, Maya, I never know how we are meant to pronounce it (a minor issue!), and however it was chosen, it is, in my view, just one of those many things which I feel I need to accept, 'cuz the people on the ground in a project have the right to make the final decision about everything, even if it is not a choice that everyone agrees with--such is life, unfortunately! You know the saying, "You can't please all of the people all of the time..." I wonder what the response would have been if they had just decided that she had remarried after being widowed and she was now Mrs 33. Any thoughts anyone?! Perhaps Ms 33?! Glider, Thanks. I hope ROP break with recent tradition and tell us when 11 returns, or if he does not, who takes over (if even half of the spare males at Rutland return, 25 will still have lots to choose from--if that happens, hope she chooses the strongest male first so there are fewer, if any, fights!)
Kind regards, Ann

Yes, a Queen Consort, just like Camilla. "Aelfthryth – also known as Elfrida", but Elfrida wouldn't have been so difficult to pronounce. (I had to do a little research, GB, I don't know nuffink about these things actually.)

That crossed my mind as I was typing the earlier post, but quickly dismissed due to the hazardous lives Ospreys live. No, she has to have her own name and if she couldn't keep Mrs5R as a name rather than an indication of whose partner she was, then something had to be invented.
Good morning all and so the day begins….
Beautiful sunrise
Blue33 ……………..
Actually it was Blue33’s head and chest, with Maya’s tail end!!
The troublesome stick …
Still there 2 hours later……….. the look from Maya
Drastic action is needed, Blue33 decides to get to the top of it
and pin it down
Sorted!
And Maya resurrects it!
