Axel & Asha (as "Mistle") fled the nest May 2021 due to unknown intruders.

HATCH #1 - 11 June @ 05:30

HATCH #2 - 13 June @ 04:11 (first sighting)

AT RINGING - Quote RSPB Abernethy Facebook "The male BLUE 1C2 is thought to be the older one at 1.5kgs with the female BLUE 1C1 being the younger one at 1.5kgs."

One shouldn't rush to judgement, of course - why isn't Axel providing?

I think there have been quite a few intruders about so maybe he's been spending his time defending the nest. But I was trying to remember if any other female osprey has brought as many (any?) fish to the nest after fledging. I'm not sure if anyone keeps a record of that sort of information.

  • Do you remember one of Mrs G and Aran's chicks a couple of years ago Do I remember tht she died in similar circumstances and it proved to be lung worm/
Very brave to make the vid SCYLLA but I am not brave enough to watch I am afraid

I checked Chloe/Tiger's Imagicat, and there is a page on fishing stats for EJ, somewhat hidden away as a link on 2012 stats.  Interestingly most occasions she went fishing were post fledge.  But in 2011 and 2012 (when Odin went missing) she went pre-fledge.  2011 it is not obvious from the stats why she started fishing on 25 June, but the elder, Tore, was 37 days, pre ringing.  2012 she went fishing on 15 June when Caledonia was 30 days old.  EJ Fishing Stats are in fact as links on each year's data.

Axel has been standing on the nest since 09.10.  No sign of Asha or 1C2.

  • thanks for checking all of that out Sheila!
  • Having stood still until now, he is pottering a bit, moving sticks.
10.58 keeping an eye on the surroundings, preening.
11.00 his second drop crop since I started watching at about 09.45 - has he caught a fish for himself?
11.03 It's gusty again today. He braces against the wind, then turns his back to it.
11.04 back to face it, and down on his 'elbows',
11.05 That's better, he's up again looking to the sky. It's so nice to see him on the nest again, without a fish, and without all the calling and scrabbling to grab a fish - and not having Asha yelling at him! .
11.07 No sign of the team coming yet.

  • A tough watch, seeing Axel on the nest with IC1's body. We should hang on to the happy fact that we have a breeding pair now at the nest, and hope they carry on returning for many years. Fly high IC1, and safe travels when it comes for Asha, Axel and IC2.

  • I agree Korky.  More importantly this is a first time breeding pair, and although one egg failed to hatch and poor 1C1 died, we have one very healthy (I think) chick who has fledged and to all intents and purposes is feisty.  It bodes well for him, and for the future of the nest.

11.14 Asha is calling. Axel has left the nest. They must be on their way.

    11.16  Cam is still running

    11.17  Calling heard

11.17  RSPB Video posted - the cam has to be switched off at the nest, so it'll take a wee while for them to walk out.

  • 11.23 the cam has gone off.

  • He everyone, just posting to say, hope you are all doing okay. Such a sad sight to see poor 1C1 lying there, not long now hopefully before she will be taken away. If birds do, Axel and Asha must be so mixed up and confused and wondering what is happening. Oh dear, such heartache. Fly high precious one, we will always remember you. Will be back later on, that will be a hard watch as well.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Cam back up 11.55 and I can hear an osprey calling
