As the 2021 Osprey season at Loch of the Lowes enters its final stage, it is reassuring to know how very well LR1 and LR2 are faring in the build-up to their first migration. Laddie (LM12) and NC0 (who, it is thought, will soon start her long journey south) are continuing to provide for, and protect, these wonderful (and loud!), young juveniles. Last month, it was fantastic to see the confidence in both LR1 and LR2 when they took to the sky for the first time, as well as watching them practise their spectacular diving skills into the Loch - sights to behold! With only a short number of precious weeks that we have remaining viewing Laddie, NC0 and their family on the webcam, let us hope everything continues to go well.

  • Thank You all for the updates recently.
Restrictions are still in place Social Distancing and Covid rules and running the VC is difficult for the staff.
Viewing is by appointment only for a 1 hour and 15 minutes slot and restricted to 4 slots per day.
I managed to secure one of the slots yesterday 1415 to 1530 and the ospreys did not disappoint.
LR2 spent most of the time on the nest with a fly back and fro to the Dead Birch. LR1 spent most of the time likewise on the birch either at the top or halfway up again taking flight now and then. At one time they sat together on the birch one at the top and the other moved half way down. They like this dead tree.
It is great to see these two on the wing.
An intruder was in the air as LR2 on the nest mantled but soon joined in the air by LM12 who saw him away.
We have ospreys on the edge my home town of Dunblane for the second year at Argaty amongst the Red Kites. We have two chicks flying around to add to the three that fledged in 2020.
Many Thanks for your updates and captures at LOTL.

  • You're very welcome Keith.
Thank you so much for sharing details of your visit, what an experience and one I'd love to emulate in the future!
Fantastic news about your local Ospreys, very much a success story there. :)

Edit - Alan Petrie posted news re the Argaty Ospreys fledging on the 'News from other Nests' thread...what a beautiful setting there, Keith

  • 10:35 LR2 flew up to the cam post

Let's hope he receives a fish soon

  • 13:27 Laddie to the nest with a headless fish. There had been what looked like a little set-to (or maybe excitement knowing a fish was imminent?) between the juveniles moments before and they'd both left the nest

LR1 was first back to claim it

LR2made a screeching arrival, LR1 was shouting and even a nearby corvid  joined in!

He managed a determined and successful steal!

He tucked in for a little while then took it off to the birch...how excited were his squeals! lol

  • 14:17 LR1 is still on the nest

  • Laddie with another fish (live this time), just after the above post! LR1 easily claimed the fish .

LR2 had already started to make his way to the nest (from the birch) after seeing Laddie approaching with his delivery

    LR2 flapped onto the nest

He looked but didn't make an attempt to take the fish from her

After waiting a little while, and without tucking in, she flew off with her fish and landed on the birch with it

  • 14:48 LR2 is on the perch. LR1 still on the birch eating

  • Up to the cam post at 15:56

  • There was a headless fish from Laddie for LR2 at 15:58

Quite ungrateful for his fish and launched himself at Laddie

And again which made Laddie know when he wasn't wanted!

    To be continued...

  • Cont'd

LR2 waited, not eating his fish

It wasn't long before LR1 made her way onto the nest, flying in from the birch

Covids were making a nuisance of themselves

One flew below the nest, the sound of which made LR2 cower

They both stood silently looking around...

    ...before LR1 took flight

    LR2 mantled

Then flew from the nest, with his fish, beyond the birch at 16:10ish
