DYFI OSPREY PROJECT – August 2019 to end of February 2020

The season so far:   Telyn (Blue 3J) arrived back 30 March and Monty on 1 April.  Telyn laid 3 eggs 17, 20 and 23 April hatching 26, 27 and 29 May.    The three chicks were ringed and named on 28 June as follows: #1 Blue KA1 (F) “Berthyn”,   #2 Blue KA2 (M) “Peris” and #3 Blue KA3 (M) “Hesgyn”.    Peris aged 52 days fledged first on 18 July followed by Berthyn aged 54 days on 20 July and finally Hesgyn aged 53 days fledged on 21 July.

August has now arrived and the migration window opens.  Teyln and Monty have done a fantastic job raising these three beautiful young ospreys ensuring they have had the best start in life to undertake their first migration.   So until such times they go their independent ways and head off south, enjoy!

  • There was just a bird on the left side of the birch but then Berthyn flew in from the left and landed on the nest, shouting. Another sibling, unseen, joined her in shouting for breakfast
  • Around 11:30, Telyn delivered a fish. KA1, Berthyn, was on the nest, another juvie reached the nest just before Telyn landed - Berthyn wasn't happy and shooed it away

Juvie came in for another attempt at landing

Telyn about to fly off, Juvie went as well

Telyn redelivered to Berthyn a minute later

12:10 Hesgyn has the fish. Monty delivered another

No takers for that and Monty flew off

12:35 A possible intruder, both flew from the nest

12:40 Monty redelivered the headless fish to Berthyn

According to chat, Peris hasn't made an appearance so far today therefore, it must have been Hesgyn who Berthyn was shooing away when Telyn delivered the fish

  • Berthyn ws eating her fish delivered by Monty and Hesgyn ws on the nest with her Suddenly Berthyn di a sort of helicopter still clutching he fish Its very windy there this moning so whether she really meant to leave I'm not sure As she landed back on the nest Hesgyn thought he would have an opportunity to steal but Berthyn ws having none of it and shooed him rigt of the nest Now Berthyn has flown with her prize.
It seems Peris not seen since Tuesdy morning
  • Just as daycam properly set in, Monty got his leg pulled delivering to Berthyn:

Hesgyn was weeping on the birch perch:

Some views of Hesgyn waiting in the rain:

He gave up after a long time but returned to get an unseeable flounder from Monty:

  • Thanks Mike - so Peris is still here! Hopefully a fish comes in soon for him
  •  This was delivered to Berthyn:

Monty repaired to get blow'd about on the birch perch:

Someone took their fish out there:

Prefabs out in the countryside?  I lived in one after the war (WWII) and it was very well equipped and cosy:

Looks like an old vantage point, someone will know:

With fish on a different perch:

Berthyn was back looking for another fish:

  • MC. The 'vantage point' is the old hide used before the 360 was built. It is much closer to the VC.
  • Thanks, MIKE :)

    Continued...

Monty brought a mullet to the nest, had to wait a bit for Berthyn to come for it:

She took her time but ate it all.

This juvie waited 40 minutes on the nest, no fish brought:

    The last scene before nightfall:

I didn't see an identifiable Peris again.
