DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Monday, 14 May 2018

Mother's Day brought MIA George back to the nest at 9:49 am, with a fish. No question that this capture (scylla's vid) epitomizes the discussion of the day.

Sigh. Are we happy or not? For sodden EJ getting a meal, yes. For what it means for the eggs, not so much. He incubated for over 2 hours while EJ was away, before he got spooked by something and left the nest, but then he returned. GJ did not bring another meal the rest of the day, so...will he return today with a fish for EJ? Stay tuned, because with ospreys, you just never can tell.

There were two intruders that EJ chased off (no GJ seen) one looked unringed and the next had a Blue Darvic and landed on the nest. ~Moffer's pic  Moffer reported that Alison at the VC posted news of the unringed intruder with pics.

Here she is for the record, much as she has been in the past weeknights, except with something in her stomach. © RSPB - Loch Garten and Carnyx Wild

Intruder touched down on nest edge and flew off.  EJ resettling.

  • Excerpts from FN3's intrusions over a 1-hour period.  I think I missed some stand-up defending when the cam went down and I didn't get it back up soon enough.

He's back, hovered across the nest with feet dangling.   Gone again.

  • hi everyone, well what a state of affairs intruder on cam post George no where to be seen. when EJ turned up I believe there was another male could someone please confirm? has anybody seen any thing like this before? the outcome doesn't look good was it George who brought the fish in on Saturday? and has George got another nest? I still believe 2 of the 3 eggs are infertile. all points of view welcome.

  • Thanks for the pics of the touchdown, Moffer.  I can't see a ring.  I wonder whether it was y'days unringed male.  No point in just wondering of course.  We will never know!

We seem to have four intruder events, one upset her, but wasn't seen;   one unringed tried to land but didn't and one ringed, Blue FN3 which again we didn't see at the nest.  We await the ring details from the VC.

13.37 it flew high over her.  She didn't get up and we didn't see it.

The same bird (presumably) returned two minutes later, and this time EJ got up and flapped.  All calm by 13.47

    15.55 another intruder alert

Were both of these events caused by Blue FN3, captured at the VC on their big screen and posted on FB

16.40 Another intruder alert which continued.  16.50 intruder's shadow was spotted, it was on campost. 16.59 an intruder touched down on the nest edge and flew off.  No visible rings in the captures.
