WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY FEBRUARY 18, 2018

Thought I'd give Diane a break this week. Sorry, no pretty pic, but here's a link - posted by Gardenbirder late Saturday - to a funny BBC page re the Wales earthquake:   http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43100524  :-))

  • Weddings:  I was surprisingly not too bothered about ours.  I would have been quite happy with a small, Immediate Family type of do but my Mother said with horror "You can't do that!!"  She then proceeded to draw up a big list of relatives.  When my OHs family also included some friends on their list, she also added friends too.  It grew to over 100.....  Then my Father complained about how expensive it was all going to be!!  "Well, they won't all come all this way"  said my Mother, as we had Moved North and all of our relatives except for my brother, lived over 200 miles away. They all came, except one.

I chose my dress by going to a hire shop and asking to try on a style shown in the window.  I also tried on another, but didn't like it so said the first one would do - it came complete with shoes and veil.  It must have taken about 3/4 of an hour in total to choose one. Here is a picture of us on the Big Day:

I think my dress looks OK!  - it went back to the shop three days later!  (the flowers were peach & yellow freesia and white somethings - it smelt lovely) It was 1973, so we only had black & white pictures as the colour ones were too expensive.

What a gorgeous photo!  Our wedding was a small, unfussy one - it was great, a nice little gathering of various people who were friends and family.  One or two brought their children as it made it easier of them to come to the wedding if they didn't have to worry about what they would do with their children!  I drove myself there with my mother - Limpy brought the best man.  My wedding dress had already been in my wardrobe when I proposed to him - it was a long, loose, floaty affair which looked lovely on the day.  We didn't exactly have a wedding reception - we just took over the local pub.  Limpy drank so much he actually showed me affection in public!!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • I love the 'I proposed to him' CLARE :-) Wonderful!

  • Diane-Got a couple of inches on Saturday, turned very warm Sunday, raining today. Maybe snow will be gone by tomorrow. Crazy warm!

Years ago, when I worked for Intel we all had to attend classes put on by the Franklin Planning Systems. They taught how to write your goals or "things to do" today and check them off as you did them. What didn't get done was added to the next days "to do list". The only thing I could think of through the whole class was that I had been doing this for years and why didn't I think to sell this to companies and get rich!

  • Lindy - Such a lovely Bride you were!!!

  • My Oh and I were married in the Little Brown Church in 1954. The same church immortalized by the song "Little Brown Church in the Wildwood". It's still there and still marrying couples. We had a very simple wedding, but we were married 58 years before he passed away in 2012.

  • Lindy - what a lovely photograph.  I borrowed my dress from a neighbour - it was very of its time, and looks terribly old-fashioned now.  We also thought 'not everyone will come' - and of course they all did!  Our reception was in my parents' flat, although we did have caterers - so not a lot of room to move about!  I'm afraid we didn't make as many years as you ...

Clare - you were obviously confident Limpy would say 'yes'!

Oh, shucks! You're too kind!   I remember losing 2lb in weight to make sure the dress looked good as I thought I was heavy - little did I know in those days about "Middle Age Spread!" My OH (who proposed to me after lots of hints....) wore a new suit which I made him buy. Don't know why he looks as if he slept in it, in that picture! But he did wear it afterwards, for about 25 years -  farmers and even ex farmers get their money's worth! Eventually he put on a few pounds but still looks much the same today, with grey hair and less of it than that 70s haircut....

We had a sit down meal for our reception in a hotel, but no entertainment so everyone just talked until we were weary. None of the big "Evening Do" which you hear about so much these days.

Sounds delightful, bjane. You certainly had many years together.
