The purpose of this thread is for recording the season’s day to day activity at the Manton Bay nest thus freeing up the Rutland Osprey Project 2017 thread for general news on all the other birds, nests and projects.
For anyone new following Manton Bay, Maya and Blue 33(11) have been the resident pair for the last two years and to date have raised six chicks. More details about the nest and a table of the breeding data can be found here. Last season Maya returned on the 21 March and Blue 33(11) arrived a few days later on the 27 March.

I am sure I speak for us all in wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season at Manton Bay.

Good to see you Noc :-)
Hi Karen and SunnyKate. I wonder why they are not trying to nest there this year. It was always so much fun to see them settling down before the osprey chased them away. :D
Tiger's Osprey News
Noc, It looks like you may not know that the Egyptian Geese DID try to nest on the Manton Bay nest, dug a nest hole and had two eggs but the Rutland people removed the eggs and filled in the hole. The Geese came back but I hope they have now given up. And if Maya returns soon she would chase them away anyway. Fingers crossed she hurries home!
Kind regards, Ann
Ah, I didn't know that! Thanks Gardenbirder. So I've missed the beginning of the season. In previous year they hadn't laid any egg yet when the ospreys arrived. Oh poor geese.
Noc, I imagine that the EGs will just find another place to nest. They seem to be very adaptable and I think I read somewhere that they can breed year-round. (If not, I trust someone will let us know!) I expect they will do alright anyway.

I expect so too Gardenbirder :-( I wonder if there are EGs at Lagoon 4 as last year they won the nest from 51(11)/3J(13) so I expect they could very well think that nest is theirs. Considering a member of the team had to dispose of the eggs/backfill that hole here at MB, I wonder what, if any, measures have been put in place at Lagoon 4. Interesting!
So glad to see you, NOC :)
